Tasmanian bowls club up for $1 million damages bill after losing appeal
A Tasmanian bowls club has lost its appeal against a $1 million payout awarded to a bowler who was seriously burned while barbecuing sausages at the club in 2015.
Champion bowler Kraig Dann sued the Port Sorell Bowls Club for negligence after hot fat poured over his hand while he worked on the barbecue as a volunteer on a "barefoot bowls" night.
Tasmania's Supreme Court heard a ceramic mug was being used to collect the fat underneath the plate of the "unsophisticated four-burner barbecue", and when Mr Dann began cooking the mug overflowed and caught fire.
